Abstract: The essay deals with the problem of evil in Alessandro Manzoni’s philosophical system, whose importance is evicted by both his works of thought and the artistic ones. This weight doesn’t exist because the writer’s reflection goes from an already acquired religion to satisfy a need of justice; on the contrary, the total disintegration of justice has directed his soul towards something that can be found only in a “beyond common man”. Poetry, like Manzoni himself wants, is strictly linked with a denunciation of an evil; which is the same the man has suffered since his appearance on earth, which leaves historical ages out of consideration and which is, therefore, absolute.
