Abstract: The ground stations of Mode S Multilateration systems (MLAT) receive Mode S signals (reply/squitter) transmitted by on board transponders to determine their position. These systems use TDOA (Time Difference of Arrival) technique. The MLAT systems can achieve high performance for surveillance in A-SMGCS in term of accuracy, resolution and identification. Multilateration systems provide the localization and surveillance of co-operative targets, both aircraft and service vehicles, equipped with Mode S transponders on the airport surface and in the Terminal Area. The typical installation presents (1) the installation on board of device Mode S compatible, (2) the deployment of a finite number of ground stations in order to have a good geometry for the measurements. In this work, a deep analysis of the ICAO requirements (ICAO Annex 10, volume IV, 2002) and of the user requirements (Eurocae ED 117, April 2003) is made.
